Formulas to calculate the CO2-Emissions

Do you want to learn how to caculate CO2 emissions?
CO2 emissions are an important indicator for understanding climate change and comparing environmental impacts.
They are also essential for demographics and to analyze climate change.

On this page, you will find the most important formulas for understanding and calculating CO2 emissions, along with a short video explaining how to apply them.

The Formulas are simple – you can use them!

Car and traffic

For the passenger car, multiply your fuel consumption per 100 kilometers by the following fixed values:

Petrol: liters × 2.37 = kg CO2

Diesel: liters × 2.68 = kg CO2

Heating and electricity

For energy consumption, the consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh) is multiplied by the corresponding emission factor.

Gas: kWh × 0.181 = kg CO2

Electricity (Germany): kWh × 0.344 = kg CO2 (current value)

You can find the formulas to calculate greenhouse gases in the pictures and a table where all the formulas are as well.
If you have trouble understanding the formulas, I hope the video up there could be helpful for you.
